The 2011 Emmy Awards had one of the most peculiar red carpets I have seen in a long time. With an abundance of way-too-heavy makeup and way-too-bland dresses, a lot of the fashion was forgettable. So who did it right? These ladies!
Right at the start, we saw Nina Dobrev turn up in a stunning red Donna Karan Resort 2012 gown. Super glossy hair and a choker-style, silver Neil Lane necklace were all she needed to complete her look.
Jayma Mays is next up in a light pink, just-cutesy-enough Zuhair Murad Fall/Winter 2011 cap-sleeved gown. The beaded, transparent bodice adds a maturity to the bow-tied look, as well as a blush-coloured Swarovski “Party Time” clutch, and silver Neil Lane jewels.
YES! Christina Hendricks got it so right. This custom-made, silk satin Johanna Johnson gown does a great job of handling ‘the girls‘ without shoving them up, as so many other gowns do on her. I find the bead and glass embellishments perfectly placed and appropriately sparkly. She completed her look with a matching clutch and satin Christian Louboutin ‘Tres Ophrah’ sandals.
Clare Danes was absolutely radiant in her strapless, sequined Oscar de la Renta Resort 2012 gown; the heavy blue combined with the embroidery looks bananas on her. She wore Irit Design drop earrings and a large Irit Design cocktail ring to top things off.
Kerry Washington was my favourite of a million red dresses at the Emmys. Her cherry red Zuhair Murad 2011 Couture gown boasted the most incredible silk tulle skirt embroidered with red pearls. Flawless.
Evan Rachel Wood pulled out the old Hollywood marcel waves and a black, embroidered Elie Saab Fall/Winter 2011 gown with an exposed back. Ballpark is not even visible, anymore. She teamed the garment with a metal cuff, a matching Judith Leiber clutch, and Salvatore Ferragamo black satin, double-platform, peep toe pumps. Marry me.
At the Emmys, Gwyneth Paltrow truly surprised me by wearing separates by Emilio Pucci. With tulle trims and black embellishments, her torso was visible without risking the ‘cheap’ feel of basic separates. The Neil Lane jewelry and Roger Vivier ‘Spider’ sandals didn’t hurt either.
I usually find Kaley Cuoco to have quite an unadventurous style streak, but it really worked for her on this occasion! Her black, one-shouldered Romona Keveza cocktail dress had a waltz length skirt that drew all of the attention to her red accessories; Giuseppe Zanotti peep-toe platform heels and a matching Judith Leiber ‘Monica’ clutch. Interesting without any intensity…love it.
The new “Charlie’s Angels” showed up and decided to take the stage with Drew Barrymore – who is the Executive Producer of upcoming ABC series – whilst looking very fabulous.
From left to right, we have Minka Kelly in a Christian Dior Pre-Fall 2011 navy lace dress with a tiered skirt. Next, Anna Ilonzeh wears a strapless, burgundy silk charmeuse gown by Romona Keveza. Obsessed with the draped sweetheart neckline. Next to Drew Barrymore, we have Rachael Taylor in a pink and silver beaded column dress by Giorgio Armani from Fall/Winter 2011. Finally, miss Executive Producer herself, Drew Barrymore, in a gown by Givenchy for Fall Couture 2011 – fringed detailing and a sheer skirt paired with the ever-popular Jimmy Choo ‘Zodiac’ platform sandals and jewels by Van Cleef & Arpels.
