It’s a sexy Rihanna package! This Vogue US cover for April 2011 looks like a homage to either Ariel (The Little Mermaid) or Jessica Rabbit, even though the red-haired songstress wears a stunning embroidered Chanel Pre-Fall 2011 dress. With such a game-changing cover, the actual spread – “Living Out Loud” – left me slightly disappointed.
It is their Shape issue, so I understand the use of the red hot Hervé Léger by Max Azria cutout swimsuit with Alexander Wang open-toe booties, but the styling (by the usually-adored Tonne Goodman) was uncharacteristically minimal from there on out; a Chloé one-shoulder mesh dress and a Donna Karan midnight-blue bodysuit. I believe it is the combination of forced style and the fact that the editorial – photographed by Annie Leibovitz – seemed poorly lit, but after such a cover the rest of the images felt slightly ‘travel catalog’. I hold all four names – Goodman, Leibovitz, Riri and Vogue – in the highest sartorial regard, so expected something a little more inspiring. Video and spread for you below!
